Extremity Pain

Pain experienced in the arms and legs can be caused by several different conditions. For this reason, the source can be challenging to diagnose. There are several systemic or autoimmune diseases that can cause extremity pain. So a careful history and exam is very important.

More frequently, conditions causing pain in the extremities is mechanical in nature. Bursitis, tendonitis, epicondylitis and arthritis are inflammatory conditions in the joints that can arise from acute trauma, repetitive motion or joint misalignment. These conditions can benefit greatly from chiropractic care, alone or in conjunction with physiotherapy. Joint misalignment in the upper extremities such as shoulders, elbows and wrist narrow joint space and often cause poor mechanics, joint inflammation or nerve compression.

Chiropractic adjustments to the shoulders elbows and wrist help to restore proper mechanics and optimize joint space for nerves to pass. Radiculitis (pain radiating from the neck or low back down the arms or legs) can be the result of neck misalignment (subluxations) or disc herniations. These conditions compress nerve roots and can cause pain or numbness to radiate as far as the fingers or toes.

Lower extremity pain also can have several causes. Sciatica is a painful condition of radiating pain or numbness to the buttocks or as far as the foot. Most often the pain is the result of misalignment of the lumbar vertebrae or intervertebral discs. (Please see sciatica section). Misalignments in the other joints of the lower extremities such as hips and knees can also cause or contribute to arthritis, tendonitis and bursitis. This pain is typically localized. Like the spine, the joints of our extremities are held in place by elastic bands called ligaments. These joints are also susceptible to misalignment from trauma or repetitive stress.

Chiropractic adjustments can be used to effectively correct these misalignment to restore movement, improve mechanics and reduce pain. Anti-inflammatory medications are often used to treat the symptom of pain but do nothing to correct the mechanics causing the inflammation. We can help.
